Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) cover nearly half of our planet and yet most of them remain unmapped.

For example, the southern Indian Ocean is home to vast ABNJ regions - but without accurate seabed data, it's challenging to monitor ecosystems or make informed #conservation decisions.

Because a complete map of the ocean underpins global progress. It gives us the knowledge we need to plan safe shipping routes, protect marine ecosystems, respond to natural disasters and manage resources sustainably.

These were the words William Beebe, deep-sea explorer and co-inventor of the bathysphere, wrote in 1926.

Nearly 100 years later, ocean science has evolved - but that same “expectant enthusiasm” continues to drive those of us working to map the vast unknown seafloor.
