There is a speed that is the most cost effective for a fish to swim a given distance, but @izzylikesfish.bsky.social & co at the '23 Friday Harbor lab's Fish Swimming course discovered that pile perch prefer to swim at less efficient speeds to accompany others

This is a super fun paper, my favorite part is that fast swimmers choose to slow down so they can swim with a friend! I was so lucky to join this crew at Friday Harbor Labs, I wouldn't trade it for the world!
Delighted to share a new paper from myself, @scubamelman.bsky.social and colleagues on the swimming behaviour of pile perch, available now in @jexpbiol.bsky.social at doi.org/10.1242/jeb..... Our findings show that both ecology and the social environment affect chosen swimming speed in this species.

So happy to finally get this out there! This was a collaborative, grad student-driven project outside the bounds of our dissertation research, but very much a passion project for each of us. Lots of tangible resources are included - check out Hannah's summary!
In 'A framework for training graduate students & campus communities in inclusive teaching', @botanyberit.bsky.social, @scubamelman.bsky.social, Chris Biggs and & I share a tips & resources for formal professional development training in inclusive pedagogy. 🧵(1/4)

Great work going on all around, it's so exciting to be part of such a passionate group!
So happy to have been awarded the Clark Hubbs Scholarship from @TCAFS for my eDNA/eRNA chapter on the southern flounder! 🧬 And even happier to celebrate this feeling with @scubamelman.bsky.social - which is doing an incredible work on Texas blennies 🐠

We kicked off our first inclusive teaching journal club at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute today! We discussed how mixed assessment methods can improve gender parity in college bio courses (Cotner & Ballen 2017).
