"Do you understand what you've done!?" Amity screeched. She jumped on the Exarch and slammed him against the floor, the two tumbling in a mass of fabric and flailing limbs as the Exarch lost his composure for a moment and Amity took advantage of his confusion. "There's a war on, you fool! She's out there alone, facing off against the Garlean Empire. If you're so caught up on the illustrious history of our world as you claim to seek her out, then you know what she faces!" "I know. I swear I did not mean to leave her there, especially not without you—" "No, you didn't. Instead your plan was to drag her here to fight your battle alone!" "It must be done!" the Exarch cried. "She is the only solution to save both of our worlds!" "And what if you're too late to grab her? What if she dies out there before you cast again?" "I have to hope she won't." Amity gritted her teeth and raised a knife, claws scraping against a mantel of crystal to find where his heart was. "I ought to kill you for this." "Go ahead. I am powerless to stop you," the Exarch replied softly. Amity faltered, swallowed, then set the knife down. "Powerless... That sums it up, doesn't it?" she murmured. "It does," the Exarch replied. Amity stood and helped him up again, straightened the robe where she'd clawed it up. "Sorry." "Nothing to apologize for. I deserve it." He had a wry smile on his face, but it soon fell to a more solemn look. "I will bring her here, and when I am able to, I hope you'll look after her to ensure she survives all of this." "Then you must, as well. You have to survive this time, G'raha." The Exarch started in shock. "I don't know who you're talking about—" "Don't try. I know your voice. I know it's you, and while I can understand why you would hide from the people of the First, why hide from me? Will you hide from her?" "I'm..." The Exarch sighed. "You're sharper than your horns. But I am merely a historian—" "She made up with K'ris because you reminded her of what her brother used to be. I couldn't tear her away from the doors for bells after you sealed yourself inside. It will destroy her to lose you twice."
