The force of drag scales linear with air density. Air at 30k is half as dense as at 8k and 1/3 of sea level.
So engines need to work twice as hard at lower altitude.
Also, effect of turbulence is greater at lower altitude.
So, these flights are slower, rougher, and burn more fuel.
