He’d never thought he could be involved with another married couple, but they’ve both welcomed him into their embrace. In all fairness, the most Liu Qingge ever thought about relationships was a far off arranged marriage in his future. Becoming a Peak Lord of Cang Qiong had meant his parents lost any ability to force a marriage onto him, not that they had been particularly forceful about the matter. Perhaps on some level they recognized he wasn’t prime husband material, regardless of how good matches looked on paper. Sometimes, if pressed, he would think that it would be nice to have a partner to go hunting with. But that’s truly the most he had ever considered about marriage. His focus has always been on becoming stronger.

Ch 22 Everything hurts, his back throbbing so much that it reverberates through his whole body. Wei Wuxian can barely think, his head pounding in time to the waves of pain. The medicine Wen Qing had given him for the return trip was strong but it couldn’t overpower the strain of flying by sword. He’s only upright because Jiang Cheng is holding him up, and Jiang Cheng is tense, well aware that Wei Wuxian is in pain but unable to do anything other than push himself to fly faster. They’ve already had to reroute once due to Wen forces. Wei Wuxian doesn’t know if he can survive another detour. /// “A-Xian!” Jiang Yanli wants to throw herself at him but she knows she can’t, so instead she wrings her hands, nervous energy vibrating from her. Wei Wuxian reaches out to clasp her hand, wincing when she grabs him. Her grip isn’t strong but it’s still too much. He doesn’t let go though. “Shijie! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to get injured!” “Shijie, I’m sorry,” Wei Wuxian says, his voice trembling. “I’m sorry.” “Sure, you apologize to her,” Jiang Cheng says but he understands. He’s not scowling so he’s definitely just complaining. “A-Jie, let go. He needs to rest.” Wei Wuxian wants to say something else but he clamps his hand to his mouth, before he throws up from the pain. Jiang Yanli barely chokes back a sob then she runs to open the front gate. Jiang Cheng drags him to his room, healers hot on their trail and Wei Wuxian gratefully inhales the first draught they pour into his mouth. It isn’t enough to completely douse the pain but it breaks through the overwhelming wave of it. Wei Wuxian exhales, and lets himself drift away, hoping he wakes up to less pain. His sleep is dreamless and formless, and when he wakes, Jiang Cheng is there beside him. “Thank you,” Wei Wuxian murmurs and Jiang Cheng stops reading to kneel beside his bed so he can look at him. “I…we should have…this wasn’t…” Jiang Cheng swallows his words and bites his lip. Wei Wuxian knows what he wants to say. That they should have thought of a different way, that they could have wiated longer, that he could have stayed in Qinghe Nie; but Wei Wuxian is back in Lotus Pier and that’s worth it for him. Jiang Cheng knows that, even if he can’t understand the full weight of it, but he shares the sentiment. Seeing the cost of Wei Wuxian in pain and bleeding anew might have made him doubt it though. “Thank you, Wei Wuxian repeats, trying to add more force into his words. But he’s exhausted and he doesn’t think he manages it. “Rest,” Jiang Cheng says, standing up to get a cup of water for him. “You’re home now.” Wei Wuxian laughs, a singular soft sound that doesn’t aggravate his wounds, because he is home in Lotus Pier again. # “Sizhui.” Lan Wangji thinks for a moment. “What characters did I choose?” # He pokes his belly, certain he’s gaining weight, but it’s impossible right now to exercise. When he wakes with the rising sun, Shen Qingqiu is deep in sleep, his back pressed to Liu Qingge’s chest. Liu Qingge burrows his face into Shen Qingqiu’s neck, breathing in the scent of him, taking advantage that Shen Qingqiu is asleep. working on the next chapter of vows but I got this fun idea for an extra that revolves around some of the letters wwx and LWJ would have sent to each other. but these are letters that get lost.
The Letters Lost En Route # Found in a merchant’s cargo. The ship was ransacked by Qishan Wen cultivators. Crew managed to escape but sacrified the cargo to do so. The letter was burned to cinders and never delivered. To Lan Zhan I have lost many homes. The first time, when I lost my parents. I don’t remember it much. It’s more of a feeling, a sensation, of just being utterly lost. I was very young at the time and it was so very long ago. The second time is imprinted on my memory forever. It’s part of why I’m fighting so hard to keep Lotus Pier safe. But that’s not a surprise. No one finds that suspicious. The third time was bleak. I told you before that I was indisposed around this time. And it’s directly because of losing my home and family. I’d argue the second time was more painful but this was definitely up there. Ranking pain seems a little unnecessary, now that I think about it.

I’ll behave! …After you explain what happened to me, please?” “You were fighting Wen cultivators and one of them burned most of your back off,” she says. “You’re in Qinghe Nie, recovering. Do you remember that?” Wei Wuxian hums as it all starts coming back to him. He’d been supporting Qinghe Nie cultivators when the battle had shifted; apparently Wen Ruohan had been spotted on the battlefield. He hadn’t seen him. The last thing he remembers is the large wave of flames. “Oh, I’m going to need to make a better fire protection talisman,” he says. “The ones you had kept you alive,” Wen Qing points out. “Same as your men.” Wei Wuxian tests out the range of his movement and finds that if he moves delicately he can cross his arms to prop his head up a little. He does so he can look at Wen Qing better. She’s dressed in the grays of the Nie sect instead of the reds of the Wen. There are three other patients in the room, but it seems like they’re mostly asleep or resting quietly.

When he wakes next, the man is nowhere to be seen but Da Qing is curled up at the foot of the bed. Whatever he says or does motivates the beast to pick up the pace and they beat Tighnari to the gate. “Did I catch you by surprise?” Cyno says with a pointed look at his ears. “A little! How did you convince the Sumpter Beast to go faster?” “Ah, well, you know, as they say, an apple a day-” “Really?” Tighnari gives him a blank, unimpressed look. But he also sees the Sumpter Beast chewing then spitting out an apple core, so he gives Cyno a modicum of leeway considering how literal he was.
