If you were working-class you would know that a lot of working-class people have tattoos that we got at various times, and not everyone has researched the symbolism or looked at a fact sheet provided by an anti-Muslim organization first.

But again, this is assuming your average person would know that. I have six tattoos; I wouldn't have clocked it.
And it's not a visible tattoo. This likely wouldn't come up in his everyday life until he decided to run for Congress and had someone running oppo research on him.

Intention matters. I spent five years protesting against fascists in Portland from 2016-2020 and I didn't recognize it. It's not something the person on the street would see and say, "I'm going to get this to identify as a Nazi." The controversy about it is a classic smear job by centrist Democrats.

I believe his story about Croatia. I'd find that a little harder to believe about a swastika, but a skull? People get tattoos like that all the time.

I care a lot more about someone's policies than what stupid tattoos they got in the military. Is this other candidate also willing to call the genocide in Gaza for what it is?

It was a fascist symbol. He acknowledged that and removed it. How many Democrats are willing to acknowledge the risk fascism in the United States?

It sucks in that it's probably going to sink his campaign. But as someone who's spent some time with drunk military guys at dive bars, his story of how the tattoo came to be sounds pretty legit.

I have family in that area in Idaho, and this was really messed up to hear about. Lots of agricultural workers of Latino descent, many of whom are 2nd/3rd/4th generation, similar to the Central Valley in California.

I don't have the article handy, but it was reported in the Guardian that two people killed were fishermen from Trinidad & Tobago.
