History isn’t reality, it’s methodology.

Historian. Husband. Iowan. Pittsburgh 🏳️‍🌈🐕🪕⚾️ Wrote a book long ago. Writing another on the Métis Rez in Nebraska. Most useful thing I’ve done is probably https://commonplace.online/article/how-to-read-a-book/
Congrats to my final grad student, Dr. Wyatt Erchak, who just defended “Private Wrongs”: A Hidden History of the First Black Civil War Regiment! Such an honor to co-advise with Edda Fields-Black here at @cmu.edu

With @aprilfmasten.bsky.social and @jonearle.bsky.social at a Rutgers-Princeton history grads cookout, circa 1994. Jon and I thought we were quite something in those shirts. April knew and knows the truth about us both. #skystorians

Teaching a favorite session today on #FrederickDouglass #Narrative — after decades of scrounging cheap original printings (1799 - 1832) of the #ColumbianOrator … I finally have enough to give one to each student & say, DISCUSS: What kinds of things could an enslaved teenager learn with this book?

25 years ago today, I first met my husband on a blind date for breakfast at a Pittsburgh diner. It’s still going strong, and so are we. Just had breakfast there to celebrate! ❤️ 🏳️‍🌈☕️🍳

Right on! The Pete Seeger I knew (as a fan and banjo novice) wasn’t the goody two shoes of the movie.

I made the Little Prince for Greg at our second Christmas; by then, I clearly had him for life and retired from puppet-making. (PS, my mom sewed the clothes.)

Going on 25 Christmases ago (Dec 2000) in the throes of new love, I made this marionette from scratch for my now husband. He nods! He strums! He chords! He Goes Electric! Ok, not that, but his lips never move! #TrueLove #BobDylan #OscarBait #TimothéeChalamet #PapierMache #Harmonica #ACompleteUnknown

I’m so sorry. Try Chazz Palminteri’s underrated film “Noel” (2004). Stellar cast, some gone too soon: Robin Williams in a dramatic role, Paul Walker with his shirt on, Alan Arkin serving up Almond cookies. The DVD sells for under $10, as low as $3. Spend the remaining $7 on tissues 🤧

My dad was born 104 years ago (12.02.1920) on the Omaha Rez in #Nebraska. Seen here in the Indian school 1927. Front row, 3d from right, barefoot, chewing hay. I’d know you anywhere, Dad. 👣 Happy Birthday to the sweetest guy I ever knew.

We’ve been floating such bargains at our house. Concluded that, yes, we’d give up our dog. But Blues Traveler? Hmmm.
