I still don't get why people pay attention to literary awards. The Nobel Prize for Literature. The Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The Man Booker Prize. Not one of these have ever honored a book with an illustrated cutaway that tells you what all the parts of a castle are.

It should not be inarguably true that a 21st century court is worse than the one that decided Dred Scott.

One of my favorite games. Like fantasy chess, but when pieces shared a square, you'd switch to a little battle board where you'd run around trying to kill your opponent's piece.

Some years later playing Battle Chess, which had a preset movie of the capturing piece killing the other, such a let down

I named my fists Didi and Gogo because there's going to be a lot of waiting, and in the end they're not going to move.
I named my fists DUNGEONS and DRAGONS because there are many other fists, most of which are more suitable for whatever you want them to do.
I named my fists Master and Commander, because together they’re gonna send you to the far side of the world.

older gamers aren't mad about wokeness in games. we're mad that DND 4th Edition was jettisoned for the mechanically inferior 5th Edition
Even by the standards of anti-woke journalism this is lazy dreck. The first piece of "evidence" that older gamers are mad about wokeness is a random Reddit comment — that isn't a complaint about wokeness.

We gotta revive the ‘80s style family sitcom so we can have Very Special Episodes about sports gambling apps and letting AI talk you into eating a handgun and whatever else this evil ass culture is doing to kids. People my age still cut up plastic rings to save sea life, that shit 100% worked

I’m dumbstruck by news of the death of Tom Stoppard—maybe because he hoarded all the words and knew how to use them better than just about anyone. I hope we savor his spectacular wit and erudition and argue about the politics of his plays forever. He was monumental, and also a kind and curious man.

AND supporting your local library is super important! If you actually DO want books to be available to everyone, the library *already exists* and is staffed by the people who are deep in the trenches of fighting censorship! Supporting the library is doing actual good for your community!
TAPS SCREEN

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

29. The Thrawn trilogy is not anywhere close to as good as you remember. But it did come at a time where there was nothing else really going on in Star Wars, and opened up the possibilities of what a Star Wars story could be.

They would make terrible movies.

Depression is a helluva thing. Diagnosed and in therapy, it was still cratering my MA. But, I'd been working in libraries undergrad and grad school, seemed like an alternative. Library back home was hiring, my hard drive with my thesis crashed, so I left academia for books and public service.
