Animal Man by Grant Morrison is a must-read, but not for the reasons I expected.

If you want a deep superhero arc, this ain’t it.
If you want mind-bending meta-fiction, this is it.

Glad I read it, but I still need more Animal Man from another writer.

On a serious note, this book was groundbreaking. Morrison explored themes of storytelling, existence, and what it means to be forgotten. Some parts dragged, but moments like Buddy realizing his whole life was controlled by a writer? Wow.

Also, did Morrison use drugs? Because this book goes FULL psychedelic. Peyote-fueled vision quests, breaking the fourth wall, characters realizing they’re just ink and colors—this was not written sober. 😂

The original Psycho-Pirate disappeared into nothingness.

His replacement? An innocent and now completely silent James Highwater. Reality needed someone in that cell, so it just... swapped him in. Cold.

Buddy lied to the Time Masters to get a time machine, telling them he needed it for League business.

Booster Gold (@TomKingTK wrote a great take on him) didn’t give it to him—he just introduced Buddy to the right people.

But here’s the kicker: this whole thing never actually happened.

By the way, what’s the JLA’s policy on murder? Because Buddy straight-up racked up a body count, and the League hasn’t said a word about it. Most of the people Buddy killed were most likely reversed when Morrison brought his family back. But still… did it even happen?

Buddy got his John Wick arc and murked multiple people—drowning, suffocation, burying dudes alive. Then someone goes, "Animal Man’s a superhero. Superheroes don’t kill." LMAO

Most of these deaths were probably reversed when Morrison brought his family back, though.

Mirror Master (@LiamRSharp drew him great in this run) is the real MVP. He had selfish motives, but he still warned Buddy not to go too far and even snitched on Lennox to set him up for revenge. There’s a code, and he followed it.

Also, Scottish slang is wild. What the hell is a “heejins”??? 😂

It’s kinda wild that Buddy forced his kids to go vegetarian. No wonder Cliff was embarrassed at school. In the ‘90s? That would’ve gotten you bullied on sight. 😂 But at least Buddy told him, "I can’t force you, I just want you to think about it." Good dad moment.

Morrison was definitely preachy in this book. Environmentalism, the nature of superheroes, the illusion of free will—it’s all here, and it’s all LOUD. At one point, Buddy literally just starts giving a lecture on how eating meat destroys the planet.

Instead, Morrison gave us a Kraven parody named Slaughterhouse—and made a whole point about him eating burgers. Lmao, full circle moment considering one of my favorite quotes from the book was: "Every time you eat a burger, you're helping to kill the world." 💀

Speaking of that—Morrison lowkey sounds salty about people suggesting Animal Man should fight other animal-based villains (or a Kraven type). Like, damn, you didn’t have to call us out like that. 😂 But yeah, I wanted to see that too.

I went into this expecting to learn more about Animal Man as a character. Instead, I got a deep dive into the nature of reality, the fragility of fiction, and @grantmorrison having an existential crisis. A legendary run, but… I still wanna see Buddy fight some actual villains.
March 4, 2025 at 11:56 PM
And then they just left Buddy alone in blankness like, “Welp, I’m out.” But hey, at least they brought his family back. Still, this whole run feels like Morrison was bored with Animal Man as a superhero and decided to make it a protest piece instead.

Morrison really must have resented Animal Man ...killed him mid-conversation, talked to the reader while doing it, and then casually revived him like, "There’s nothing wrong with you." 😂 So meta. So cruel.

This book was WAY deeper than I expected—politics, superhero tropes, existentialism, and a dude literally getting his arm bitten off by a rat. On to Book 2! If you’ve read Morrison’s Animal Man, what stood out the most to you? #DCComics

Hamed Ali really pulled up on ALIENS and told them ‘this craft is mine.’ My guy had no fear, just straight-up colonizer energy. 🤣 #AnimalMan

Morrison’s aliens talking about how Buddy assumed he got his powers from a ship explosion ‘because that’s just how everyone gets powers’ is PEAK self-aware comic writing. 😂 #AnimalMan

I was tracking deaths in Animal Man and… the number of Black characters getting murked compared to everyone else is wild. Intentional critique or just a comics trope at play? Let’s discuss. #ComicsAnalysis

Buddy and Mike Maxwell went looking for a new B'Wana Beast in Tanzania. I was READY to side-eye this whole process, but shoutout to Morrison for actually making the successor a Black man AND having him call out ‘B’Wana Beast’ as a white imperialist title. 👏 #AnimalMan
