Any conversation about return to office vs work from home that does not acknowledge the ongoing pandemic is ignorant, ableist and destined to miss the mark.
Many, including disabled people but not only disabled know they cannot risk getting COVID and offices haven’t taken steps to protect workers.

"More than 5,000 fossil fuel lobbyists were given access to the UN climate summits over the past four years, a period marked by a rise in catastrophic extreme weather, inadequate climate action and record oil and gas expansion, new research reveals."

It's a mess out here.

This bill is a spectacularly terrible idea. And it is extra insulting that they are doing this during COP30.

MA folks do call your reps about this. There are also rallies tomorrow.

"Oil-dependent emergent economies are right to demand that the rich countries carry most of the burden, but if we are to wait for the people who broke the planet to be the ones with the strongest initiative to save us all, then we are fooling ourselves"
I've been working since 2022 to try to form the basis for an alternative reading of sovereignty fit for the polycrisis and promoting true, just and internationalist transitions. This view of popular ecological sovereignty is in a few articles, but I just reflected on it in the context of COP30 too:
Ecological sovereignty: from mutual annihilation to true planetary longevity?
When fossil fuel expansion is justified in the name of national sovereignty, you know states have lost touch with the climate reality.

Bounty Hunters.
They are really revisiting the original purpose of policing-slave patrols-to inspire their visions of the future.
SCOOP: ICE is allocating as much as $180 million to pay bounty hunters and private investigators who verify the address and location of undocumented people ICE wishes to detain, including with physical surveillance, according to procurement records reviewed by 404 Media.
ICE Plans to Spend $180 Million on Bounty Hunters to Stalk Immigrants
Newly released documents provide more details about ICE's plan to use bounty hunters and private investigators to find the location of undocumented immigrants.

Glad to have delivered our speech at the #COP30 plenary opening, emphasising the urgent need for climate action to keep the 1.5°C goal alive and placing communities on the frontlines of the crisis at the centre of key decisions.

This is a mess. Any dem who is listening to reports or consultants advising them not to address climate change is not the right leader for the times we are living in. People's lives are being upended by the impacts of climate change and leaders need to have a plan for addressing that.
Ahead of midterms, climate policy has become a wedge issue splitting Democrats. After last week's electoral victories, some Democrats will only talk about expanding clean energy through lens of affordability. Others believe talking about climate change will win voters. www.eenews.net/articles/ret...
Retreat or recast? Democrats debate future of climate politics.
Democratic election wins last week reignited arguments on how — or if — candidates should discuss climate change on the campaign trail.

One of the things we* learned from the genocide livestreamed from Palestine is that the obvious, indisputable starving of children is not enough to move the American political class. The brutal revocation of SNAP is no different. Been thinking about how far this says we are from the horizon.

"Hiring professors with PhDs is meaningless if administrators are the ones deciding what gets taught,” he said. “Faculty will start asking not, ‘Is this accurate?’ but ‘Will this get me in trouble?’ That’s not education, it’s risk management.”
#HigherEd
Leonard Bright, president of the Texas A&M Chapter of the AAUP said faculty were not consulted on the proposed changes, which he called “a direct violation” of their expertise + freedom to teach. “If that’s the case, there’s just going to be a further black eye on higher education here in Texas.”
Texas A&M to vote on banning “race and gender ideology”
The proposal appears to mark the first time a Texas university system offers definitions of what kind of instruction related to race and gender should not be permitted.

Earlier today, a mob of Israeli Jewish settlers attacked and assaulted roughly 30 Palestinian villagers and activists, plus about 10 journalists who had gathered during an attempt to harvest olives near a settler outpost in the Israeli-occupied West Bank

Things were already bad and we were being asked to turn water into wine. But as (public) univs are having their funds restricted/illegally terminated, these pressures and demands are only going to get worse, especially as univs try to make up for those funding gaps by increasing enrollment 😵‍💫🥴
AI is enticing because it makes it seem like I might be able to do all the things I’m asked to do. I can’t write 5 articles, revise books, mentor students, write letters of recommendation, teach classes, work in the community, review for my peers, etc. and be a whole person.

New — While some states have received SNAP benefits for November and USDA is supposedly pushing through all federal payments soon, that doesn’t erase the psychological terror of the last few weeks.

I spoke with 20+ SNAP recipients in 16 states about preparing for a possible future with no food:
The voices of SNAP
Recipients have become political pawns. They explained, in their own words, what Trump withholding funds has been like.
