Here, another piece from an Ecuadorian coatal culture shows a shaman with a fetching butterfly barette.

The left is a clay representation. Sebastian thinks its of this genus of moth which is typically a pest on Yucca. Something that would be grown a lot. This is from a preincan costal culture

Went to a presentation today showcasing insect iconography in Ecuador's precolombian and preincan cultures!

this emerald jewel wasp wearing its prey's dead husk of a body like a hat as it newly emerges is the most disparagingly cute thing I think I've ever seen

The Empress!! I was so worried when I started because like ... all the spindly eggs - but where we have a whip scorpion with her noodly babies.

For instance the mindo-nambillo reserve is the work of many people each buying a chunk of land for their own reasons. This creates a mosaic of protected forest that now is about 20,000 hectares (~50,000 acres / 78 square miles). And it connects to other reserves reaching Quito.

What's one thing you wish people understood about conservation?

For me - is that it takes many forms. It's not just putting a fence around d a chunk of land.

Often it requires collaboration but one person or a small org can do more than you think.

Waita after dark.
Many things glow under uv light! One of thr most surprising to me was the trees covered in ... a mold? Lichen? I'm not sure but it popped in the UV light like a neon camouflage pattern.

See second image for lables

Scorpions and daddy long legs also glow blue under the uv light.
