Looks like a female-type, and you are cited 🙂 Was the one on Boavista also a female?

Hi Paul, eBird says yes, drake and female were observed since Sep. However, numbers may still get higher in that location.

Interestingly, a strikingly similar Aythya was observed about 1000 km SSE in Finland 2 weeks earlier that was ID'd as Tufted x Pochard (7), but pretty much is in line with the description of Rigbäck as well (8).

Some more in depth analysis of this bird. Tufted x Common Pochard was my first thought and it cannot be excluded in the end.

#BirdHybrid I am not sure what I got here...terrible pictures, my apologies, I only realized that this is a Teal after browsing pictures from Jun 20th. It is clearly in molt, it almost looks like it could be a Green-winged teal, but I do see hints of two white stripes. Hybrid?

Some souvenirs from a recent 2 hours of birding trip to Blue Heron Lake at Golden Gate Park San Francisco. Technically probably not really great pictures, but both lifers within 100m and kind of a cool mix of species.

These are Mallard x RcP and Wigeon x RcP hybrids with no to little red on the bill:

#BirdHybrid A duck recently posted on Fb, picture taken a couple of days ago in Switzerland. Looks like a hybrid with Scaup in it, plus Ferruginous Duck or Common Pochard. However, some aspects argue for and against one or the other. The head seems to have a purple sheen. Any thoughts?

....and due to Ring-necks pairing up with Pochards in Europe these hybrids should exist, but I just cannot find any pictures. Since this weekend, my interest in this combination is increasing :-) Weeze, Germany:

#BirdHybrid Presumed hybrid Greylag x Barnacle goose close to the Rhine river near Ingelheim, Germany (Mar 19th 2025). However, after scanning the literature a bit more, I am trending more to Greater White-fronted x Barnacle. Any thoughts?

Nice pic! I was hoping to get a similar one from a nearby vagrant female RND, but only managed to get it with a Common Pochard.

#BirdHybrid Recently (re-?)discovered Tufted Duck x Lesser Scaup hybrid just West of Boston, MA, at Chestnut Hill Reservoir and Hammond Pond (pictures below). Sorry for the poor quality, it stayed 200 m away from me with the Ring-necked Ducks. More at media.ebird.org/catalog?regi...
