How much better would discussions of AI be if we didn’t frame them in terms of anthropomorphic anxieties but instead discussed it directly in terms of “the application of Bayesian principles to enable systems to learn from data and make accurate predictions about future events or unknown outcomes”?
Saying “AI isn’t intelligent in any meaningfully human sense” is akin to saying “steam engines weren’t strong in any physically human sense” — it’s a true statement, but only trivially so, because the most crucial questions about these systems aren’t about whether they replicate “the human” 1-for-1.
Large language models “are not emotionally intelligent or ‘smart’ in any meaningful or recognizably human sense of the word,” Tyler Austin Harper writes. Understanding this is essential to avoiding AI’s most corrosive effects:

It's a hydrogen thing, Jon and it's not unique to trains. H2 solutions are easy to imagine if you don't look at the economics or laws pf physics. There won't be a consistent H2 train this side of 2040 and probably ever, in Europe.
