I assume it’s a Spiderverse type situation but for Italian pizza chefs.

Just flipped through it and I’m so mad at past me for not reading it sooner. Thank you for reminding me about it!

This also works pretty well in SotDL/WW where initiative is more prescribed. Like in DL pcs always went. Unless it’s a boss. Stuff like that. Break the rules (planned ahead of time not punitively). I told my players that bosses would break rules like that so it wasn’t a surprise and didn’t feel bad.

I almost always give them extra turns (not all at once, throughout the combat round) and have them do aoe attacks, status effects, summon mooks, change the battlefield etc. Things outside the scope of normal enemies and usually the PCs.

That’s also how Dragonbane handles monsters. I usually try to think about ‘boss monsters’ in ttrpgs like a video game boss; think about their moveset and have them be a little more bombastic than just like attacking. ⬇️

I backed the fuck out of that but haven’t checked out the quickstart oops lol

I literally bought the core books so don’t threaten me with a good time!

I think having reasons to stay mobile are great for having more dynamic fights, you don’t get the situation where everyone stands still and hits each other until someone dies.

Having NPCs that the PCs care about that are in danger is also great for ratcheting tension and also encouraging movement.

Yeah having pits/chasms/bridges etc is so fun. Last game I ran had a sinkhole opening up and it gave the PCs a reason to move and/or kick/get kicked into and it was a lot of fun.

Have fun buddy!
November 6, 2025 at 9:18 PM
I don’t know anything about it really! I’ve heard way more good stuff about than bad tho.
November 6, 2025 at 9:16 PM
What makes combat interesting for you as a GM?
November 6, 2025 at 9:14 PM
Listen motherfucker, show me where I said I’d wouldn’t try Cortex?
November 6, 2025 at 9:13 PM
