I haven't played chess in over three weeks due to vacation and camping, that I was afraid that my skills had taken a hit. I played my first game on chess.com in almost a month and won without losing a pawn, which feels uniquely good.

About a month ago I played at the "Your next move club championship." I won one game and drew a game and got 7th out of 8 in the U1800 section. Five more games closer to having an established rating.

Oh, and I won best unrated trophy!

AI rendering of a photo my wife took by surprise while I was playing at @sanduskychessclub.bsky.social

I'm sad that #HikaruNakamura didn't attend the Ohio Chess Congress this weekend. But I can confirm that pineapple Hawaiian shirts add 100 Elo to your rating.

Based on this information, I really need to study the Sicilian. This isn't a surprise because I commonly refer to it as my "Crappy Sicilian defense", due to all I'm doing is using my knowledge of the English and reversing it.

My plan this week was to play 4 games a day on @chess.com and then check my insights to see where I should focus my studies. I ended up playing 48 games (over 6 a day). My rating went up 37 points to 1218.

The first game was just kings and pawns, and the second game included same colored bishops.

I found this method to be a great way to get more practice in roughly the same time as a full game

Ended with both of us having a king and rook each, hoping for the other to blunder

To be fair, they did take three of my pawns and I won by resignation.

My first brilliant move!

but then I continued calculating knowing that my opponent was going to trade for the bishop so they could castle. I saw a discovered check I could play to ruin their castling ability...and went for that forgetting that losing my rook was a bigger threat.

I was playing such a good game of chess today and then I blundered a rook at such a stupid move. I had calculated the right move to defend my rook early on...

Additional opening performances

This is an example of how my chess career usually goes. I come back from not playing for years, I lose a few games, and them my brain goes into "I'm an idiot, we need to get gud" and then I climb up again

I would totally wear a wrestling mask to chess tournaments if it wouldnt be considered rude

I played game afterwards and have been studying the English. I missed a hanging pond because I didnt calculate during the opening, instead I focused on development. The game came down to a pawn war.

No blunders though... but certainly some moves I could have improved upon.

This morning I watched this video on preventing knight forks and how to handle them if they happened. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGx2...

So when I played this game and white goes for the fork, I let it to test out some of the advice. I did not do well. I need to analyze the game and rewatch the video.

Do you get overwhelmed studying chess moves from books or Youtube Videos?

I use @lichess.org to make my own interactive lessons and then practice them enough times that I add them to memory.
