I don’t think I can even explain the nightmare that was last night, but this image is an attempt to show what an attack - one mainly targeting a single city with nearly every weapon they have, for hours - actually looks like. I live in this city. Millions of people do.

They rounded a bunch of random Venezuelans with tats and pretended they were in tren de aragua, then started blowing up random Venezuelan boats they claim “carried drugs,” in order to slowly groom their base into supporting a full ground war on Venezuela that was always about oil
Whole bunch of stuff beginning to make a lot of sense.

Prepping to teach this tomorrow. All these 80s British antiwar films are so horrifying thanks to their realism. They're often in direct dialogue with contemporary documentaries and news specials; and are steeped in the history/aesthetics of realist style. Would love to see more eco-dramas like this.

The cool thing about capitalism is that my house insurance rates go up far more every year due to climate change-related risk management by the insurance companies than my taxes would if my country invested heavily in climate solutions and clean energy infrastructure.

everyone keeps dancing around it but JD Vance keeps trotting out the “immigrants are taking our housing“ because it’s a nativist blood libel he’s engineering alongside eg “they eat our pets” but, more specifically, it is to legitimize the dispossession, en masse, of an entire sub-population.

Lots of folks captioning aurora photos like "for a few minutes we didn't think about politics"

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation

Seattle has had a series of mayors who got elected promising to “finally” use police to crack down on homelessness — the existing policy that every previous mayor has deployed.

Once they get into office they don’t deliver because it doesn’t work. We waste four years and the problem gets worse.
The story about the gun got buried, virtually nobody in any position of influence talked about it. The more significant element of this was money. The business class within Seattle really liked his harsh-crackdowns-on-unhoused-people policy, and they put a lot of resources behind his campaign.

how sure are you that we’ll actually get 60+ votes in the senate?

or that this caucus and its centrists won’t use their 1 to 3+ votes to sink the most important supreme court reforms like they do *literally every time democrats take power*?

we can’t risk it folks. too much on the line.

the point of camo for a soldier is to obscure their position from the enemy. camo in an urban environment is completely different, and this forest green or desert pattern is functionally useless.

police only dress this way to project an image of power they should not have.

Assault on Precinct 13, what a picture. The emptiness of a western siege meets the creeping horrors of the night. That John Carpenter, he's going places.

To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?

Whenever Ken Starr returns to the news, it's fun to remember that one deputy investigating Bill Clinton (and Vice Foster) was ... Brett Kavanaugh!

Extra fun to remember that GWBush FL Recount team in 2000 included Brett K, J Roberts, AC Barrett.

Plus help from FL gov Jeb Bush. Good times!
Ken Starr emailing with Epstein in 2018 is a really interesting thing to learn about!!!!!!

Landon Thomas Jr of the New York Times got told by Jeffrey Epstein that Trump walked into a glass door bc he was so busy staring at girls in Epstein's house and didn't print it. wild that the Times didn't consider that newsworthy.

Ghislaine Maxwell lied about Trump never going to Epstein's house (directly contradicted by her email correspondence with Epstein), and she was rewarded for that lie with a transfer to a cushier prison. The coverup is happening in plain sight.

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

The president of the united states is a pedophile rapist who was best buddies with Jeffrey Epstein and spent hours with an underage victim at Epstein's home. Now he's currently huddled in the situation room directing a cover up about it like it's a seal team 6 operation. Do I have that right?

Whoa, they just basically confirmed the Katie Johnson story.

Her testimony is literally on youtube, and whenever I point out that she sounds absolutely reliable, and that everything points to her testimony being true, there's always a miscreant in the comments saying "there's holes in her story."

Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Neutrality and objectivity are not the same thing and are, in fact, often contradictory goals. The objective truth is often not neutral in its political implications, and it would be a useless exercise if it was.
Got turned down on a piece about ICE in Chicago for an international news org because they believed I couldn’t be objective about my neighbors getting kidnapped. And well, guilty as charged I guess.
