"Alligator Auschwitz" is also gross. Why do you need a cutesy name? Why is it funny to you? I think it trivializes the Holocaust and the 1.1 million people who died at Auschwitz. Please just think about it.
Can we nip this "Alligator Alcatraz" shit in the bud? We don't need to adopt their cutesy marketing when talking about the concentration camp in the Florida Everglades

Just got off a call with Dem leadership in the House
1. There are over 20 republicans that are soft on the Budget Monstrosity
2. They will get a ton of pressure to vote for it
3. We can create even more pressure to vote against it, but it will take all of us
4. We only need 4 flips.

I keep thinking about how Trump, during his first term, talked about building an alligator-filled moat to use against immigrants, and few really took him seriously, and now he talks about sending Americans to CECOT and it gets brushed off the same way

Fascinating paper on something I never thought of: When we remove big old animals from wild populations (like fish) we might be losing important cultural transmission in species that learn from elders - Essentially culling transmission of collective knowledge onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Overfishing Social Fish
Social learning is common among vertebrates, including fish. Learning from others reduces the risk and costs of adaptation. In some longer-lived species, social learning can lead to the formation of ...

A new study estimates that USAID saved 92 million lives from 2001 to 2021, and that its demolition could kill 14 million people in only five years through 2030.

That would make the end of USAID by far the most impactful action Trump has taken this year. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...
USAID cuts could lead to 14 million deaths over the next five years, researchers say
An analysis published Monday in the medical journal The Lancet projects that cuts to the agency will lead to more deaths from diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

USAID (inception-2025, daily): Here's another press release on the amazing work we're doing!!!
Media: Bor-ring.
Media: American readers don't care.
Media: Ok fine page "world news" page 23 below the fold.
DOGE: USAID is dead
Media: Is that's bad?
USAID dude: It's our fault, somehow?
Media: print it
You hear this a lot on the left but it isn't true. USAID did not "fail to tell its story to Americans," the right targeted the agency with lies and misinformation.

Ultimately this narrative turns conservative attacks into even more calls for the left to reform.

A new paper in The Lancet, one of the world’s foremost peer reviewed medical journals, estimates that USAID prevented 91 million deaths across 133 countries over 20 years.

The paper estimates that Elon Musk’s DOGE funding cuts to USAID will lead to 14 million deaths by 2030 (4.5 million children).

USAID funding has significantly contributed to the reduction in adult and child mortality across low-income and middle-income countries over the past two decades. Our estimates show that, unless the a...

USAID *did* communicate well, explaining how they simultaneously benefited people around the world and advanced US interests, which is why bipartisan majorities kept re-upping it. Good point.

USAID wasn’t a campaign topic, and Trump/Musk bad faith attacks weren’t a USAID public messaging failure.
USAID success was communicated, that's why it was funded by both parties over decades

The blitzkrieg from Musk was not communicated, and he has blood on his hands

Welp, Middle States has put Columbia on warning. Can't tell if this is just appeasement or if they are seriously considering pulling Columbia's access to all federal financial aid. I just do not see why any uni would negotiate with the administration.

What the what??!
I have genuine questions about this. Florida's proposal on this topic (which I'm confessing I should have read back in May) suggests the DOD would activate 10 FLNG JAGs under Title 10 (which part?) and then... somehow assign them to EOIR to be immigration judges? Which... how? Under which authority?
