Not all species of opossum play dead (technically called apparent death), but the Didelphis genus (Virginia, common, big eared, and white eared opossums) does. They even have thicker spines than other opossums that help if animals pick em up when they’re faking death

For opossums it’s probably because their pouches are circular and not as pocket-like. They’re also on the underside of their bodies, so you can only really notice them when they’re bulging from all the joeys
