1/ In terms of comparative examples, when anybody brings up the "man of his time" defense of Gygax, I always think of Palladium and the infamous early insanity table.

For anyone thinking the worst, the nickname was "Injury Girl" because I kept ending up in A&E or the warm embrace of the adjacent nursing college students with a litany of injuries, bloody gashes and, on three occasions, broken bones.
I had an entire university of people know me by reputation and nickname, for precisely zero benefit.
In that regard, I think, it was infamy? Whatever it was, it wasn't fun.

Well now I'm just imagining Emily and Charlotte having a blazing row over percentile versus d20 systems, while Anne is *desperately* trying to get them both to entertain a system with playing cards and goose feathers as randomisers.
The Brontes didn’t contribute ideas like GNS theory or rethought how theme and mechanics interact, and while exploring the development of folk games is interesting it doesn’t get us very far. Crediting the people who systematised previously woolly ideas is the point.
