Sorry to preach to the choir 😭 It’s just all so dang frustrating.

There are so many magical girls shows airing on the regular that are for girls, but most of the time, they don’t get picked up for EN language distribution. It’s been a lifelong struggle to share this genre with people because people insist that shows for little girls just don’t sell.

It’s so frustrating because it’s a genre I’ve poured so much love into and seeing misinformation being spread on such a constant basis is just 😭

There ARE issues with male-targeted magical girls, but it’s not that it’s taking over the genre. It’s that that’s all that tends to get LICENSED.

There are some really important discussions to be had about magic girls and how they’ve changed through history, but people keep parroting bad information they’ve heard as if they’re facts (Sailor Moon was the first magical girl! Madoka killed the genre! It’s all for men now!)

I feel like some fans also have this strange rose-colored nostalgia goggles on about it too, because they insist the shows they like weren’t for kids because they felt so mature, but like… Of course they did. You were a kid when you watched them, silly.

Younger than six, even! The target age group is pre-K!

Absolutely! It's one of the only essays I've ever read that actually understands the history of magical girls *and* the current state of magical girl media. It's been such a struggle loving magical girls for so long and seeing people pull the same tired arguments over and over again.

They're both here, btw! The Leaked Experience magical girl essays are the only ones I ever feel I can recommend for people who want to actually know about magical girls.

I just don't watch or read anything magical girl essay related most of the time because 99% of the time it's just badly informed nonsense. I've read *two* essays total about magical girls that were pretty decently done, and they were by the same person LMBO.
