This elderly man showed up to support an anti-trans bill in my home state and then, because he had to wait hours to testify, he was stuck listening to queer folks rally against it

By the time it was his turn to speak, he'd changed his mind

Never doubt that speaking out can change hearts and minds

Hate that it has come to this, but it's time to consider PubMed vulnerable to enshittification. My latest post @plos.org discusses the lines we need to fight to hold – and alternatives we can rely on internationally:

What if We Can't Rely on PubMed? - Absolutely Maybe
PubMed is incredibly reliable. And a lot depends on it. It’s an ecosystem built around MEDLINE, the steady feed of new publications…

And no, genuinely top-tier copy editing can't be done by "AI," because, like with translation, there are subtle bits an LLM isn't going to pick up on, because it's not actually intelligent. There's more to copy editing than just grammar. A good copy edit can make a story better. Brains are required.

To anyone alarmed by the hulking figure seen striding through the wind and swirling snow like a furious bipedal bear—fear not! It was only I, an average-sized editor out for a fast-paced #stetwalk, swathed in multiple winter layers.

NEW: Musk shutdown USAID. BUT, remarkably (accidentally?) he left the USAID Inspector General’s office open.

It’s just published a report on the agency’s closure:

- $489 million of food at risk of ruin
- 500,000 tonnes at sea/in storage at risk of ruin
- 🚨terrorism monitoring in-country halted🚨

If you want to “Make America Healthy Again,” one of the worst things you can do is slash the budget of the world's largest public funder of biomedical research, the National Institutes of Health.

Hats off to Gov. Evers for aiming high and working hard for the things that matter!
If we want to improve kids' outcomes, we need to shorten the odds. My budget will work to cut costs for working families and make sure kids are fed and communities are safe because doing what's best for kids is what's best for our state.
