There is no feminism in essentializing women as body parts, subjecting us to additional surveillance to prove membership, and policing entrance to the category woman. We do not make women safer or freer this way.

WICCD’s members may spar with our Crown prosecution colleagues in the Courtroom, but WICCD stands with them in defending their independence and the integrity of their work. It is shocking and unacceptable for a police service to pressure or threaten a Crown, in an effort to influence how the Crown exercises its discretion. “Crown objectivity and the separation of Crown from police functions…must be safeguarded.” The conduct and statements from the Edmonton Police Service this week reflect a profound misunderstanding of the police’s role in our system.
“One of the critical dimensions of a prosecutor’s independence[…] is independence from the police.” The Crown does not answer to the police, and it is not their job to please them. This critical separation “between police and Crown functions has been reiterated in reports inquiring into miscarriages of justice.” It is dangerous and unconstitutional for a police service to lose sight of the respective roles of the Crown and police in the legal system, and expect the Crown to answer to them in their decision-making.
Crown counsel are an essential part of a justice system that is fair and effective. The information available to them in exercising their discretion is broader than that available or known to police investigators. The factors and interests they are duty-bound to consider are broad, complex, and reflect their obligations to the public, to victims of crime, and to defendants in criminal proceedings. Their independent and quasi-ministerial role exists precisely for protecting the interests of justice in difficult, emotional, and upsetting cases.

A paper came out last month demonstrating the rate of global temperature increase is growing exponentially, and presenting terrifying projections for when we hit global tipping points and I can’t really stop thinking about it. 3 degrees is..very very bad and closer to us that the year 2000.
