A few thoughts from a rainy Sunday on my hopes for the left.

Gratitude to all those who make the time and space to read it.
White text on black that reads: In the last year and a half I’ve been speaking up about what I stand for as a Jew and human being, for an end to genocide being perpetuated in my name, for freedom and equality for Palestinians, for their right to return, and for collective liberation for all. Those posts took courage to write, and this one does too. Given the weaponization of antisemitism by the right that strips it of all meaning, and the ongoing destruction of Gaza by the state of Israel, it is hard to speak about my hope that the left would embrace tackling antisemitism in its fight against all oppression. But I think it is strategically important, never more so than in this moment. Antisemitism is often not included in the list of isms and in intersectional discourse on the left. Jews like myself who are part of the left, miss this. It can feel lonely. Much of this is due to the fact that antisemitism looks different than other oppressions and is not well understood. Jews look to be a privileged people, and in many respects, especially for those of us with white privilege and class privilege like myself, we are. But antisemitism is a systemic oppression and we are seeing it in sharp relief right now in the way it splits movements, in its mechanisms of scapegoating (look into Project Esther) and so on. Trump is making Jews the face of his fascist detainment of pro-Palestinian activists (his ‘Shalom Mahmoud’ is no accident.) In Canada we have similar dynamics and threats should Poilievre come to power. White text on a black background: It serves everyone’s interests, not only Jews, to work to better understand what antisemitism actually is and seek to end it. But because in our mirror world, antisemitism is seen as an issue of the right many on the left stay away. In the face of the state of Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza and in the West Bank, It feels impossible to champion Palestinian freedom and also fight antisemitism. I am living proof it’s not impossible, but speaking up can feel difficult. All of these oppressions are intertwined. We need more non-Jews on the left to do this work with us. To be clear, I’m not amplifying ‘the left is so antisemitic’ discourse. I’m talking about a need for a strategic change. I’m saying it needs to be taken on in conjunction with all other oppressions. Selfishly, as someone watching my own community’s deep moral crisis, I know it would help encourage more Jews to embrace the left. And perhaps most significantly, it would make it impossible to divide and weaken our movements. The left is extremely vulnerable to this at this moment of rising fascism.
