Let me impart some wisdom: If you can see only one more concert in your life, go see Skindred.
Is raggae metal from Wales a weird idea to you? Wrong! It's a great idea and they are absolutely phenomenal live.
Had the time of my life last night, cannot recommend highly enough.

One and a half year old me on Crete. No lore, I just knew I had to be an archaeologist from a very very young age.

I usually don't cat post but today I have to. My sister's diabetic orange boy was found safe and sound after being missing for 3 weeks. I'm very relieved that the little cuddle bug is home.

Cat tax below.

Herculaneum today. I might like it more than Pompeii. Yes, Pompeii is larger and flashier but for some reason Herculaneum was more my thing. Absolutely love seeing traces of wood in the buildings and the furniture in the museum.
Some highlights:

Today on the Naples vacation plan: Pompeii!
Apart from some public transport hickups I had the best day. Obvious highlights: The house of the Vetii, the house of the Faun, murals everywhere.
Less obvious highlights: The small things. Wheel ruts, pottery used as building material, cats.

I did! So many goodies in there. I obviously loved the gold painted Aphrodite but the Lakshmi (?) and this table really took my heart in there.

Day 1 of my Naples vacation is pretty much done and I vastly underestimated how much time I would need at the MANN. Guess I'll have to come by a second day.
Some of my favourites from today below.

Seeing this little cutie in person feels very special. Such a cool memento mori motif.

I know it's heavily restored but the Farnese bull group absolutely never ceases to amaze me.

Today's mission: Trying to find the upsides of being precariously employed in archaeology.

Being able to go for a little bike ride and have a nice picnic by a lake in the middle of the day on a Wednesday for example.

Getting out of the house to write was very necessary today. Working on something very exciting for the looting/repatriation/heritage protection crowd.

Grieving my dog apparently means making a tiny little doggo out of air dry clay. First time ever trying something like this and I'm surprisingly pleased with how it's turning out.

On Sunday we lost our 15yo dog Camun.

He was the sweetest, calmest, cuddliest boy who loved nothing more than blankets and cheese.

I'm absolutely heartbroken. He will be so very missed.

I was accidentally sent 2 copies of this year's spring edition of The Journal of Art Crime. The nice people at the journal told me to keep it.
So if anyone wants it and is willing to pay for shipping from Germany, let me know.

One of my favourite paintings ever! A smaller print of it is the first thing I see whenever I enter my apartment.
July 7, 2025 at 12:04 PM
Step one: Trying to file down the texture from the print without losing too much of the beautiful, delicate details of the original artisan. This will probably take quite a while.
My jeweler's tools are coming in handy here.

I wrote my MA thesis about the Apollo Sauroctonos in Cleveland and I'm obsessed with it. Luckily, the museum made a 3D scan open access and I have a family member with a 3D printer.

I might post my progress with finishing this copy in the next weeks.

I'm spending the weekend in Würzburg at the yearly conference of the German Association of Archaeologists (DArV).
Later I'll give a talk on new research of the Cleveland Apollo provenance but first a nice walk through the city's huge park.

Lunch break = protest today

Today we're standing in favour of outlawing the extremist-right German AfD party. We can never let Nazis have power again.

Interested in Tattoos?
Come visit Museum August Kestner in Hannover, Germany and see our exhibition "Tattoo. Antiquity beneath the skin". It covers tattoos in the ancient Mediterranean, 19th/20th century tattooed carnies, and why people today get ancient motifs tattooed.
