PC(USA) pastor. Dogs, gardening, & church snark. All opinions expressed here are my own, and do not necessarily represent my congregation.
I put this Lenten sermon series together the week after the election last year, and it has turned out to be a perfect fit. I couldn’t call it “how to survive fascism,” but that’s basically what it is. You can follow along here: youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Without downloading new pictures, where are you mentally?

Someone reminded me today that I spent almost four years living right down the road from this 7-story basket-shaped building, & had to drive by it every single time I went into town.

That period of my life feels more like a fever dream every single day.

Same, Aaron. Same. (Insta was buffering and the expression it caught was…this.)

I can’t stop thinking about this book. Published in 1955 by a journalist & professor who did in-depth interviews with 10 average men who were all part of the Nazi party. He wanted to know what they were thinking and doing, and he ended the project afraid for his own country. He was right.

This list is known as the Ten Stages of Genocide. We’re seeing a move from the first 4 steps (words/ideas) to initial organization/preparation. Moving migrants to Gitmo, building prisons in El Salvador, privatizing education for disabled kids - the goal is to remove “undesirables” from public life.

This post from Musk, arguably one of the most powerful and influential people in this country, sets off every alarm bell I have.
He’s not just denigrating individuals - he’s grouped them into a separate class, given them a dehumanizing label, & praised those who other them.

The end of today’s sermon on Luke 5:1-11.

It’s going to get scary out here. You will feel inadequate and unprepared. Do it anyway.

Look at this happy girl, so excited to see her BFFs at the vet. If only we were all this excited about self care!

I just made a hospital visit. I’ve been here probably a hundred times in 4 years. But today, a new requirement: ✔️ in, show ID, get custom visitor badge incl. name & floor visiting. This requirement means the building is no longer public space, so ICE can’t lurk/search w/o a warrant. I love it.

Hi, I’m Pastor Sarah, and I have zero chill.

This confession was written by a coalition of German Christians in 1934, refuting the idea that church should serve the ideals of the government.

You can read the entirety of the document and a brief history here: parkwoodchurch.com/wp-content/u...

Sound familiar?

I read this tweet out loud in my sermon yesterday, and there were several audible gasps of horror. I was like “yes, that is the correct response.”

I told my congregation back in November that if/when ICE shows up in my neighborhood, I might not be able to physically stop them from detaining my neighbors. But I WILL make them as uncomfortable as possible while they do it. So here’s a printable list of Bible verses you can scream at ICE.
