Do the Democrats have leverage or not? First you say the Democrats are powerless to influence policy so it's unfair to blame them for this outcome, then you say it's their decision how long the government is shut down.

For that matter, if the Democrats' plan is to make let the Republicans cause harm so voters blame them for it, then the shutdown is their best case scenario, so why end it ever?

I think "only a small percentage of foreign-language learners become so proficient that they could successfully pass for native" is a safe assumption for any country and any language. Languages are hard and passing for a native speaker is not a goal most learners have.
