I've decided to give this account entirely over to listing words in the day's NYT Spelling Bee that are not accepted but really should be. Some may be dialectal, some scientific, or informal... etc., but all established (Merriam-Webster) commonly used words. #nyt #Spellingbee #lvc #sociolinguistics
Why isn't 'flatulate' there? #nyt #spellingbee

Yesterday, we had a lot of unaccepted words. Although not in MW, I would like to highlight that my own native Irish English term 'gombeen' was overlooked, as was the OED recognised 'bogmen', referring to men found preserved in the bog...

A 'Cloacal' kiss... the act of the birds and the bees.... but only birds, not bees.

Clitic... why aren't you accepted by NYT, you're perfectly acceptable?

'Gallow' is a variant of 'gally': to frighten or terrify

'Willowing' is not in MW but is in the OED. It describes something spreading out in all directions, like a willow tree. Quite a lovely word!

Yesterday, there was 'emic', or was it 'etic'...? Anyway, their exclusion is really annoying. Today, we have nibbed, not in MW, but in OED, I've definitely heard this being used, haven't I?

'Boolean' and 'nano'.

'Nobble' - to incapacitate a racehorse by drugging it (MW). #Spellingbee #NYT

Also, fun #crossword today! Had me driven crazy for the first while!

'Ungenuine', often confused with non-standard 'ingenuine', neither are accepted. Nor is 'gunge' which is a granary or market in some dialects (MW), or what speakers outside of the US might call 'slime'.

'Apath', a noun, can be used to describe a person who shows indifference, often towards suffering... timely, but indeed not in MW.
May 22, 2025 at 9:27 AM
'Punnet', as in, a punnet of strawberries. Apparently lesser used in US Englishes, but what are North American fruit buyers asking for at the market? #NYT #spellingbee
May 21, 2025 at 7:27 AM
Toity - silly or frivolous (MW). Intonationally - in an intonational way (OED).
May 20, 2025 at 10:28 AM
Natally-at or during the time of birth-while not in MW, is in OED but I guess we'll have to let this one slide. Anyone find any others today? #spellingbee #nyt

Today's words:
#Ectopy: Ectopic heartbeats are changes in a heartbeat leading to extra or skipped heartbeats.
#Yeet: Slang used to express surprise, approval, or excited enthusiasm, also a verb meaning to throw something with force commonly found as an answer in the NYT crossword. #NYT #Spellingbee

The GAA can bring in 2-point stores and 3v3 no bother but bringing in the option to wear shorts will take An Cumann years? I'm sure the Camogie Association can figure this out!!
