Before the HMOs in ‘73 a doctor visit cost a week’s salary for me. It was the same for all the workers I knew. And—just because most were NFPs doesn’t mean they didn’t charge extravagant prices or make huge profits.

They didn’t cover you if you had any condition or were pregnant, or they excluded the condition. Discouraged preventative care. Before ACA I never went to the doctor for a checkup despite having insurance. I had no insurance as a student. Delayed a surgery until condition became life-threatening. 2)

They were NFPs, but they didn’t provide healthcare. They paid for hospitalization for some conditions. It was usually an employee benefit that came with the admonition not to use it unless you were half dead. If you paid your own, it was a king’s ransom. I didn’t know anyone who could afford it. 1)

Have we ever even recovered from Reagan’s destroying PATCO? The government hasn’t taken air safety all that seriously in decades. This does say they were ready for a long shutdown, though.
