Here I unpack the term “racialised (un)belonging” as I use it in my work. I rely on Spillers' "ungendering" to describe a process that is produced through a colonial history that inscribes the racialised other as ever beyond the bounds of humanity.

I am still One Tired Penguin and I have spent the morning taking my wife to the doctor because she's done her back in (very painful, very mobility-limiting muscular pain) :(

I had to leave earlyish but I had so much fun at this! We have an amazing bunch of trans students at our uni and I loved meeting them.
update: this event is going VERY well!!! we've had really good attendance - i think ~35 people total :DDD (and people are still trickling in!)
I'm so pleased we got this off the ground! It's going to be great fun.

I'm doing involuntary AcWriMo (ie compelled by deadline) but this is a great thread for anyone who's also writing at the minute.
Here's 7 Academic Writing Month (AcWriMo) resources for you. Happy writing ✍️💻

Please share with a friend 🫶

1. A live podcast recording about public writing for academics with my friend Lisa Munro, PhD @llmunro.bsky.social. That'll broadcast on YouTube tomorrow, Wednesday, November 12.

You might be unsurprised to learn that my invitation to chat about this has not been taken up.
With respect as I think you genuinely believe in this phone initiative, I would love to know what the Labour government is doing to make trans kids and adults safer, because I'm despairing.

I'm a researcher of trans law and recently cowritten on trans childhoods in the current climate, if it helps.
And how do those children typically access the media they've been radicalised by? 🤔

Measures like this are not intended *instead of* measures to keep trans kids and adults safer, but they're not at odds with those objectives either.

I forgot to take one of my meds yesterday and when that happens I always have the most vivid dreams. Anyway, last night Catherine Connolly was at my mam's birthday party on a boat, she was very sound and enjoyed the really excessively large cake.

Yep. It was supposed to be, "you can't fire someone for being privately transphobic".

It's morphed into, "You can't fire someone who is transphobic even if they're destroying your company's reputation and harming children."

People are not fearful of Farage in Downing Street because they worry that he wouldn't competently manage the bureaucracy or grasp the finer points of macroeconomics. They worry because he is palpably a nasty piece of work who would govern actively against their interests, even their safety.

Looking forward to this book, which I think will be an important contribution to a couple of different fields.
On December 15th, I will doing the first in a series of launches for my first monograph (due November 25th!). This first event is a Routes Network Seminar at the University of Exeter and will include me launching the book and a discussion with Raawiyah Rifath from the University of Exeter
