I guess I need to add that pundits have to get out of a normal democracy mindset too.

Every disaffected Dem & swing focus group we do begins with people asking what's real. They hear, at times, this is authoritarian takeover threatening lives & livelihoods. But perceive most "leaders" not acting as if this were so.

Agreed. I think the fundamental problem is that a significant proportion of the party—including its leaders—believe none of these things. bsky.app/profile/jame...
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous
