It’s a new year which means I’m obliged to ply my wares! I write about and teach around art, culture, history, identity, and their intersections. I’ve written for places like Frieze, The Guardian, Little White Lies, and more. I’m always looking to write for new places, so hmu
This absolute beauty from @secondsightfilms.bsky.social arrived today. Thrilled to have contributed an essay on the ghosts of ‘Elevated Horror’, and West’s desire to make something new from its remnants

Back in the Substack salt mines, deleting the old newsletter in the hope of making something readable from the ashes! Named for a symbol in Le Guin’s Always Coming Home, Heyiya-If (and other possibilities), will be a place for slower criticism: heyiyaif.substack.com/p/heyiya-if-...

Not to be hyperbolic and extra, but Vulture's placement of 'The Outing' in their ranking of Seinfeld episodes in one of the worst takes I've ever read, so here's my essay about why it's great and Seinfeld is a messy queer masterpiece: www.intomore.com/entertainmen...

How gay was Seinfeld, actually?

Today’s Editor’s Pick is 'The Rise of the Anonymous Critic' by @sam-moore94.bsky.social for Frieze. How writing negative reviews under a pseudonym can free criticism from the social constraints of the art world—and the importance of avoiding the tasteless writing it can inspire.

Back at @lwlies.com (and back to promoting work) with an essay on political violence, Salo, and more: lwlies.com/articles/fas...
Spectacles of suffering and fascism in cinema
Across the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Guillermo del Toro and Brady Corbet, the evils of fascism come to light in horrifying detail.

The best to ever do it. I vividly remember the joy, shock and singularity of watching Twin Peaks with Joe and dad; seeing Mulholland Drive in Oxford and understanding it’s the best film I’ve ever seen; being terrified by Inland Empire; moved by Sandy’s dream in Blue Velvet. “Fix your hearts or die.”
