I wrote about the‼️Encanto ADU housing story through city council conversations ➡️TLDR; Council members snuck “Footnote 7” under a radio towers zoning law, not the ADU program, which reduces density regulations by 1/4 for developers in Encanto vs the 20k sqft for the rest of the county.

San Diego Housing January 17, 2025 Issue #1 Page 1 We are Encanto A Communities fight to stop corporate development Encanto and their Southeastern SD neighbors suffer from lack of drainage, are considered food deserts, have no sidewalks or bike lanes, and are fire hazard severity zones. Unified in yellow, the community of Encanto, alongside other Southeastern San Diego community members, filled chambers on July 15, 2025 to condemn San Diego’s Accessory Dwelling Unit Bonus Program. The ADU program allows for higher density housing in both regions under a sneaky footnote calling for a minimum lot size of 5,000 sq ft vs the 20,000 sq ft required for the rest of San Diego. Border Patrol raids immigrant communities Families of loved ones taken by Border Patrol, across the Central Valley, plead for help on social media. Businesses are empty and fruit fields rot. This is the reality of raids heightening across California. 1/5 San Diegan’s are immigrants or refugees. They are our neighbors, families, coworkers, and friends. Page 2 Who is Responsible for homelessness Mayor Todd Gloria believes it’s the County of San Diego, calling out other cities for not pulling their weight in offering resources. He claims to have increased shelter beds over 70%, but has not (fact checked by Voice of San Diego).This follows the City of San Diego’s failed fundraising for “San Diegans Together Tackling Homelessness” in 2024, with a goal of $370 million. The city raised $1.3 million and held a single trash pick-up event. Cont. from page 1 Council member Henry Foster III, District 4 (which includes Encanto, Chollas, Emerald Hill, and more) was Chief of Staff when the footnote became law. Monica Montgomery Steppe passed the footnote. A community member stated this allows fast tracking for developers who will not be enforced to pursue traffic and environmental studies, calling it “kick backing.” $258.2 million deficit Mayor Todd Gloria hosted his 5th State of the City on January 15, 2025. Addressing hiring freezes and potential cost increases from parking meters to traffic violations across the City of San Diego. Citizens voted against Gloria’s final ditch effort to reduce the deficit through Measure E in 2024, an increase in sales tax from 7.75% to 8.75%. Programs, like Cal Fresh, are concerned of being cut down.

Potted zine issue #1 Page 1 Grow potatoes in a bag Potatoes are root vegetables, fuel tanks for the sprouts above. Rich in vitamin A and C, roots can nourish our eyes and lungs. Yams, carrots, and beets may be some of your favorite root veggies. Roots are tough; surviving hundreds of years of harsh winters, typhoons, and hurricanes. With a vegetable so well adapted, why not try growing some? You don’t need a giant hill and sprawling land to grow potatoes. All you need is a burlap sack. Buy a bag or sew one out of sturdy porous fabric. It should be 1-2 feet tall. Use sprouted potatoes. Remove all sprouted eyes, except 1-3 on one end to reduce competing growth. Dear reader “WHERE IS MY F**KING GARDEN?!” 1 in 3 San Diegans spend over 50% of their paycheck on housing. We live in dry walled cells with hotplates, detaching us from nature. Green spaces can’t only be reserved for the rich. POTTED is for San Diego house plant parents (I’m not having a baby Mom, I have Lola, my Fiddle Leaf, to take care of), windowsill succulent collectors, & anyone far and in-between. Nurseries as a Third place City Farmer’s is a third place, an oasis in a concrete neighborhood. You can eat breakfast at Nate’s nextdoor, see some goats, and grab some new plants. Although Farmer Bill has passed, his nursery serves as a reminder that no matter where we live we can grow a garden. White sage Name This Plant! Over-harvesting from protected lands for smudge sticks (claimed as sustainably sourced) and urbanization leading to land loss are main causes. Now add 4-6 inches of this mix to the bottom of your bag. Add 2-4 potatoes sprout side up. Cover with 4 inches soil and grow! ICYMI: Old Town, San Diego celebrated Las Posadas on Dec 13, 2024. Neighbors reenacted the pilgrimage of Joseph & Mary seeking shelter prior to the birth of Jesus. A tradition paralleling Catholicism brought by Spanish Invasion. Songs and candles ended with community bonding.
