Really excited to see how biodiversity and ecosystem functioning can be enabled through biochar projects.
New Project Update🍃
FEFA and partners are trialling a project to test if carbon credits from turning woody biomass into biochar can fund bush clearing. If successful, it could offer a scalable solution to bush encroachment in African savannas. More here: futureecosystemsafrica.org/news-and-upd...

This paper reinforces the need to shift the focus from carbon towards overall ecosystem and social outcomes. And (of course) simply to reduce emissions

Sivu Situngu shows that bacterial and fungal richness increases with frequent burning in a semi arid savanna. #SSNM. Lovely data and analyses.

It was a long journey getting this paper out. We are not against early season burning, we are for giving land managers freedom to use fire as a tool. We want to highlight how much data and knowledge are available in Africa, but often ignored.
New@naturesustain.bsky.social paper challenges the "one-size-fits-all" approach to fire management in Africa. Early dry season fires may not reduce GHG emissions or meet conservation goals. Local knowledge & nuanced strategies are key phys.org/news/2025-01...
