Advocating for zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in #JerseyCity

#JCcrashes We are sad to say there was a fatal crash killing a driver on Route 1 & 9 and Halleck Ave yesterday morning. Route 1 & 9 is notoriously dangerous, and there have been 4 fatalities on Route 1 in Hudson County so far this year. NJ State and NJDOT must make much needed safety improvements.

#JCcrashes Two car crash this morning at Brunswick and Columbus. No verified details on what happened here but drivers often gun and run the light going down Brunswick, which may have contributed to sudden braking on the Columbus side. This half of Columbus is also awaiting a full redesign.

#JCcrashes 🤬 Two men were hit by a car running a red light at JFK and Fairview and taken away in ambulances. JFK is a notoriously dangerous County Road, and we need the County to take action to redesign the roadway to be safe. #FixJFKBlvd

SUVs and pickup trucks are high risk to pedestrians and cyclists. Children are 8X more likely to be killed when struck by an SUV or truck than by a passenger vehicle. But Jersey City does not currently have any policies to discourage larger vehicles.

Jersey City is considering lowering the speed limit from 25mph to 20mph. The evidence is strong that Twenty is Plenty. When Seattle lowered their speed limit from 25mph to 20mph injury crashes decreased by 17%: www.iihs.org/news/detail/...

Redesigning Johnston Ave will make it safer. Narrowing travel lanes and adding protected bike lanes are proven traffic calming safety measures that will make the roadway safer for everyone.

New quick build improvements at Pavonia & Erie St. This keeps crosswalks clear and narrows the crossing between PS 37 and one of Jersey City's other pedestrian plazas, just in time for school!

Thank you Mayor Fulop and Councilman Solomon

#JCcrashes Reader reports there was a bad crash today at Summit and Crawford near Montgomery. Another sad yet predictable crash on Summit. Mayor Fulop has made a strong proposal but requires Council support. When will we have the courage to #FixSummit?

Serious injury and fatal crashes in the western half of Jersey City tend to happen along major north-south roadways. MLK, Bergen Ave, and JFK are high-injury have a long track record of tragic crashes.

Example of seriously effective left-turn calming in NYC using orange armadillos to extend and harden the centerline.

Calming left-turns in Jersey City would protect pedestrians from left-turn crashes, the number one intersection danger.

Why are one-lane streets safer than two-way two-lane streets?

1. They narrow the crossing distance and
2. Eliminate conflicted-left turns, the major intersection danger.

How much safer?

Data from Montreal shows two-ways result in *75%* more pedestrian injuries (!!)

This afternoon, cut-through Turnpike & Tunnel traffic aggressively rushes through Jersey City. At 6th & Jersey, the site of Eli Bender's recent crash death, a NY TLC driver crowds-in and illegally blocks on-coming traffic.
