Founded in 2001, Instituto Sacatar is the longest continuously-operating artist residency in Brazil. Since its inception, Sacatar has awarded fully-funded residencies to over 500 artists from all artistic disciplines, coming from more than 70 countries.
Sacatar Fellow Vírus Carinhoso performed at Itaparica's public school Colégio Estadual Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro, this past Friday.
"Sankofa" was presented to high school students as part of the ongoing partnership between Sacatar and the school.

On his recent visit to Bahia, President Emmanuel Macron met Sacatar Fellows Salimata Diop and Beya Gille-Gacha at Casa do Benin (Salvador), while visiting the exhibition "I Am a Black Ocean", a project born at Sacatar.

Our Open Studios will take place this afternoon, at Sacatar, in Itaparcia, Bahia!
Our doors will be open for everyone to come meet our artists-in-residence, and get to know their works.
During the Open Studios, Senegalese artist Nathalie Vairac will present the performance "The Voice of My Silence".

Sacatar joins the Year of France in Brazil!
The current session includes Sacatar's collaboration with the Fondation des Artistes, and hosts the launch of the Bahian chapter of I Am a Black Ocean, a transnational project connecting France, Senegal, and Brazil.

As part of the opening of the Bienal de São Paulo, there will be a performance by Hamedine Kane. Hamedine was in residence at Sacatar during the month of April 2025 to prepare for his installation at the Bienal. He bought two boats while in Bahia which he will have de-constructed for the Bienal.

For the third consecutive year, Sacatar is partnering with the Institute for Diversity in the Arts of Stanford University to create a residency session focused on the African diaspora. This group has artists from various backgrounds, including three artists from Bahia.

The graphic novel Sob o Signo Ancestral, a thriller set on Itaparica, will have its launch event on June 17 at 6:30 PM, featuring a talk at the Goethe-Institut Salvador. The author, Lucas Ribeiro, developed the project during his residency at Sacatar. Don’t miss it!

Artists living in any African nation may apply for this residency+travel grant. As a US nonprofit with significant activities overseas, the ban imposed by President Trump against people of many African nations doesn't affect us. Creative Africans of all disciplines are MOST WELCOME to apply.
