Post a perfect album from the 90’s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice In Chains.

Ash Ra Tempel — New Age of Earth

Not listened to this for TIME. Prob like 10 years, soooo good.

Music Ask

(Likely pick for the fourth one is anything from a Sondheim production)

#MWE — Day 20

Albert Ayler Trio — Spiritual Unity

Well, this one was intense. It felt like if you put Pharoah Sanders’ overblowing technique on steroids, pure expression from start to finish. I loved it. Enjoyed the back end, where things get pretty moody. Would listen again, for sure.

#MWE — Day 19

Miles Davis — Kind of Blue

Back on the saddle with a legendary record, it’s easy to see why it’s so revered. Great trumpet and sax tones throughout, cool energy all round. Nice one to wind down with, too. Loved the deep, emotional playing toward the end as well.

#MWE Day 10

Meshell Ndegeocello — Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape

Listened to this on a pair of cheap and nasty earphones and it still banged. Loved the political bars and the absolute bounce of some of the instrumentals, which made me want to start skanking on a packed out morning commute.

#MWE Day 9

Ahmad Jamal Trio — At The Pershing: But Not For Me

Lovely, light, dainty playing with a great bop and verve to it. Felt like a breeze to listen to and I connected with Jamal’s piano playing a lot more than Monk’s, for example. Just a cool record all round.

#MWE Day 8

The Pop Group — Y

Great album that sounds like funk put through a burning oven. Delightfully caustic, odd and weird, like all great post punk should be. Absolutely loved the rhythm section, too.

#MWE Day 7

Thelonious Monk — Brilliant Corners

Appreciated the easy listening of this compared to some of my other jazz picks, nice change of pace. A great, upbeat album with loads of mastery from Monk and Rollins. Will return to this one for sure.

#MWE Day 6

Sun Ra — The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Vol.1

Motifs bubble and burst like a volcano, some passages are lyrical and others are like a meticulously arranged jigsaw. I thought about how the approach to listening to music changes when established structures are taken away.

#MWE Day 5

Prince Far I — Cry Tuff Chants On U

Proper dub, this one. Straight head-nodding business from start to finish. Prince Far I has a voice that sounds like it’s come from the depths. Appearances from Creation Rebel and Singers & Players which make sure the rhythms are HEAVY.

#MWE Day 4

Les Amazones D’Afrique — Amazones Power

I really enjoyed 2024’s ‘Musow Dance’, so choosing this made sense. However, it didn’t grab me right away. In the name of balance, though, this had some killer electronic textures and the deep funk of ‘Dogon’ really caught my ear.

#MWE Day 3

A.R Kane — 69

Slightly cheating as I have heard this *once* about 2 years ago. Anyway, what some bands take 4 albums to do, A.R Kane do in 1. There’s wispy, shimmering guitar tones; beautiful dirge and noise and timbres with the strength of towering buildings. An undeniably cool record.

#MWE Day 2

Eric Dolphy — Out To Lunch!

This felt like an eruption. Draws you in with standard playing, then bang: the clarinet mutates, the trumpet sings and the staccato rhythm mix with the vibraphone to create a textural tour-de-force. Defo wanna come back to this and get deeper into it.

#MWE Day 1

Nick Drake — Pink Moon

Love the guitar playing on this one, sounds like a bird opening it’s wings and soaring through the sky at times. There’s a real intimacy to the music and the cover is quality. Will defo come back & dive deeper into the catalogue.

Okay here’s the #MWE List. Two weeks worth of jazz from the 50s & 60s with heavyweights like Miles, Mingus and Monk, which in my jazz journey I haven’t got round to. Some U.K. post-punk and dub with a heavy Dennis Bovell and Adrian Sherwood bent. Then, some random folk, neo soul and modern bits.

Kinkajous — Nothing Will Disappear

First time listening to this, stuck it on while working from home. Cool, modern jazz. Got those textures that make you feel like you’re about to levitate.
