this mix is amazing btw
or sometimes it's grime's sparser, more synth-y sound palette just sped up...

Post a perfect album from the 90’s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice In Chains.

(Likely pick for the fourth one is anything from a Sondheim production)

Finished James Baldwin’s Just Above My Head today. What an absolute belter of a book. So rich, searing and alive.

Had fun making this. Starts with dub, into jazz/soul and brit funk style stuff, then onto grime/garage/modern rap and back down again through soul, jazz and dub.

Not really familiar with billy woods’ music but this was a really interesting read
Fascinating interview w/ billy woods, where the interviewer being more red than head works in the interview’s favor; lots of basic questions (that maybe most of us would be too cool for school to ask) that elicit fantastic answers. Highly recommended. jacobin.com/2025/02/bill...
billy woods: “My Music Is Radical, in Its Own Way”
Rapper billy woods is a leading figure in contemporary underground hip-hop. He spoke to Jacobin about the inspiration for his music and his left-wing politics.

I can’t stop playing this new AJ Tracey & Jorja Smith tune. Hearing two superstars do R&G must be like what Marvel readers felt like when Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as Dr Strange.

Enjoying #MWE. It’s fun to just sit and listen to music, especially after a day at work. Last time I did it, rhythm felt like an important thread between the records. This time, feels like texture is becoming the important unifier. Exciting to stumble across stuff like that.

#MWE Day 1

Nick Drake — Pink Moon

Love the guitar playing on this one, sounds like a bird opening it’s wings and soaring through the sky at times. There’s a real intimacy to the music and the cover is quality. Will defo come back & dive deeper into the catalogue.

Okay here’s the #MWE List. Two weeks worth of jazz from the 50s & 60s with heavyweights like Miles, Mingus and Monk, which in my jazz journey I haven’t got round to. Some U.K. post-punk and dub with a heavy Dennis Bovell and Adrian Sherwood bent. Then, some random folk, neo soul and modern bits.
February 2, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Gonna do this. Rough list idea is

- Jazz from the 50s & 60s
- 70s-80s post punk, AR Kane/Loop & 90s post rock
- Folk music week
- Soulquarians week
#MWE STARTS THIS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 1— oops sorry for shouting.
