Made this vertex painting effect with the two base materials (brick and plaster - 3 samples per)

and a single 256px greyscale map I made (2 samples)

Need to fix the normal, DDX/DDY too aliased

Also nice is its lerped values not just BW, so little if any noticeable tiling
