Historically Notre Dame didn't go to bowl games until 1969. Recent history though they have, but have never had to choose when the 12 team playoff existed. So maybe this is the start of new tradition of not going to bowl games outside of the playoff, especially since they are totally unnecessary now

Naw, man bowl games outside the playoff are pointless these days. It's never the same team. Does anyone remember the Bama v Michigan bowl game last year? No. It was pointless.

This argument doesn't work anymore with the massive sizes of these conferences. You have teams in the same conference that don't play the same schedule, it's why Miami didn't make their ACC championship, the conferences are too large.
