Special education and large scale assessment at ATLAS at the University of Kansas. Described by many as "fun in meetings."

📍 Lawrence, Kansas
I am on my annual May Staycation this week. For 5 days I clean stuff, fix stuff, and do house projects without my offspring and spouse underfoot.

Upon reflection, I am in an ongoing, expensive fight against entropy that I cannot win.

Learning maps are large, fine-grained, intentionally inclusive, research-based cognitive models. Read about their uses in instruction and assessment in this new paper from me and six colleagues who have worked on map-based projects during the last 10+ years. #edusky

Seems like even chances that we're heading into the THIRD "once in a lifetime" economic calamity that I'll get to personally experience. I am 45 years old.

Great job, everyone. No notes.

Oh goody. Another snow day tomorrow.

Happy Kansas Day to all who celebrate! 🌻 We're the rectangular one in the middle that has a little nibble out of the top right corner.

Shout out to the lady sitting in the car next to mine in the grocery store parking lot. And shout out to your two rotund kitty-cats enjoying tasty wet food from little dishes on the dashboard. Y'all look like you're having a real pleasant afternoon.

Man, you'd think rich people would be a happier bunch.

I find out what children know about things adults think are important.

The seven-year-old child (who was up at 6:00 both weekend days) is still in bed at 7:23 on this school day morning.

Spending this afternoon at the Dynamic Learning Maps winter governance meeting in KC with folks from our partner states. The discussions are good! The cookies are good! The temperature control in the room could frankly use improvement.

Did my family talk smack about my lunch? Yes they did. Were they wrong? Yes they were. Leftover stuffing waffles with mushrooms.

Me: I will never again get sucked into a new Netflix show because they're just going to cancel it after a season one cliffhanger.

Ted Danson: I'm starring as a loveable widower solving a mystery undercover in a retirement home.

Me: Goddammit.

Ahhh, the annual pre-Thanksgiving fridge purge. It's like a festival of forgotten condiments in here.

It's so weird to me that the word "disrupt" has taken on this glow in the eyes of some (strange) people. You can disrupt a school play by standing up and screaming profanities. Disruption is quite easy, especially if you have enough money and power. It doesn't suggest you'll do any better.

Closing out the weekend watching some Doctor Who with the youngest child.

Go big or *buffering*
I would say Netflix has a mixed record at having the infrastructure to support live events and have them run smoothly. Is that fair? If that's fair, I might have run a few more that were a little lower-profile before I went to "Beyonce Christmas Day halftime show," buuuut we'll see, I guess!

I do all the grocery shopping for our family so I call it "hunter-gathering"because it sounds more macho. It kind of kills the vibe when the store is playing Hanson's MMMBop at full volume.

It's a pretty perfect fall morning in Lawrence, Kansas, so the 7 year old child and I walked to get donuts. Anyway, "walkability to donuts" would be a good index to add to Zillow.
