For dysfunctional people, being smart is often like gunning the engine of a broken car. Energy goes to the wrong places and the broken things get more broken.

Institutions can work this way too, or whole societies.

It's important to remember that there is, as Grace Paley wrote, "a whole huge country of the bad and the unlucky and the self-hurters, a country with a population greater than that of many nations in our world."

These are all smart young ambitious people they’ve only been exposed to a very specific subset of the world’s intelligent people.

I would be curious for that number too! Of course much harder to measure
