Very nice. If you're going to expand on this you might want to think about risk/reward which is really the main mechanic of avoid-em-ups. i.e. there should be more reward for collecting a power pill close to a floating brick. Don't Die Mr Robot is a great example of this type of game.

I think splatoon 3 and Fortnite have a similar approach. The lobby can be dual purpose, a place to mess around for a bit or a place to warm up/run drills

You can always choose a lower res vid mode to maintain that pico8 feel. Vid 4 will give you 160x90

Game feel suggestion - position rings high in the air and underwater. Then have waves that can send you high and allow player to tilt jet ski to send it underwater. This is why wave race is still the GOAT today

IMO, worth it to be able to create more readable code. Only downside for me so far is the SFX stuff is a bit over my head compared to Pico8

I managed a 200 run with a combination of intense concentration and risk avoidance.

- no jumping
- no long snakes, just keep banging small drops into the drop zone
- avoid the edges as much as possible

That being said, it’s really a game of concentration. Bring at 150 is no harder than 50 - other than sweaty palms

Yes I have that problem too. Some other options might be that hitting the wall causes you to lose what you have in the snake trail or some other kind of penalty that isn’t as bad as instant death.

Oh it’s a lot faster, I’ve slowed it down now and made the grid the same size. I think it would be an interesting series to do a “what if” experiment for each ufo 50 game

I think it depends on whether you want the main source of tension to be the controls.
