Not a Speck of Light was my favorite horror short collection I read in 2025--considering that list also includes competition from Thomas Ligotti, Stephen Graham Jones, John Langan, and Karl Edward Wagner, I can't really think of a stronger recommendation.

Everyone imitates Tolkien all the time except when it comes to the one way it would really matter: making the protagonist of your novel for children a short, fat, 50-year-old man who doesn't want to do anything.

My take is even IF AI was true AI - it could think for itself and therefore IS generating 100% original ideas; it's still theft. Because at that point, you have created a sapient being, and then stole it's work.

Absolutely, and I think in some cases this is behind the trans/queer panics - it makes you feel WEIRD and ICKY so it has to be kept away from you, rather than you handling your feelings like an adult and thinking 'don't get it, but sure'
The way some people talk, it sounds like they literally equate uncomfiness with material harm.
