Life In Balance Dept:

Yesterday eve at dusk, I saw a rat come through the fence into our yard. I was upset, thinking what this pest would do to my garden.

Today: same time of day, same spot on the fence, a Cooper's Hawk landed. It stayed a while, as if to say, "No worries, I've got this."

1st green bean harvest. Beautiful & perfect, but not as plentiful as I could wish. Total 4 oz. Perhaps I should have waited till they were bigger...

This is the output of 10 plants in 2 bags. The 3rd bag has not bloomed, so none there yet. Guess I must devote 4-6 bags to green beans next time.

Update on BP & diuretic (chlorthalidone):

It's been 1 week at lowest dose, 12.5mg/day. BP is normal! No more numbness/tingling/burning in hands! 4# of water gone.

No side effects! Seems this is the perfect tweak for me. Am drinking more water to avoid dehydration +supplementing calcium/potassium.

My BP, stellar since my 1st child was born, has risen alarmingly this past year. I think it's due to left-side radiation + tamoxifen. Started a diuretic today. This could help not only BP, but body weight, blood sugar, inflammation, joint pain, swollen feet/ankles. My hopes are high.

Sweet moments - camp dinner outdoors, then sitting around the fire pit after dark, then returning to a comfy and inviting Calypso set up in night mode. Soft music playing on Bose speaker.

Finally completed my 10 year project to watch ALL 322 of the "TCM Essentials" films. For a long time I was stuck at 321, because Ashes and Embers (1982) was unavailable anywhere. I finally found it, today, at rarefilmm.com. Possibly not coincidentally, it was apropos for Black History Month.

Learning to crochet with a Woobles kit. I'm enjoying the process a lot even though I had to unravel & restart 3x. At this point I've learned some about reading patterns, plus single crochet, increase & invisible-decrease stitch, slip stitch, chain stitch, and fasten off. Here's progress so far.

Nice little harvest today for tonight's salad and a kale stir-fry later in the week. 34 leaves of lettuce, 10 spinach, 14 kale, 3 cherry tomatoes, 11 peas, and a couple of rough lemons. I might go cut a scallion or two later.

Potatoes. Planted 6 sprouting minis leftover from a purchased bag from the market, back in October. Today the tops had all died back so I harvested. Here's what I found (the shriveled ones at right are what I originally planted).

I found her at a thrift store. The maker went to some trouble to make her look pretty - pink cheeks, sweet eyes, rosebud mouth, red hair, bow. And that stick fires my imagination. It was likely a broom, but might become a long spoon, a wand, a flute, a violin...

Sweet potato that's hung around the kitchen too long.

Enjoying Universal Yums. It's a subscription service that sends a box of interesting and representative snacks from a different country each month. The first one we got, Taste of History, had items from all over the world. Delicious! Next month, Spain.

Yesterday's beauty/joy moments included 1) unexpectedly finding the latch peg from my antique whatnot (damaged in the move and that bit was missing), 2) checking on one of our geocaches that had gone AWOL, and finding the tiny thing half-buried in the dirt below its hiding spot. Lucky day!

Obsessing over negatives; gratitude practice hasn't helped. So I will try collecting/savoring moments of beauty/joy. Today's so far: 1) sipping an excellent caramel latte, 2) the satisfaction because my car's misaligned wiper blade is fixed, 3) singing along to the radio.

Looking for escapist activities as go-tos for stress-busting. So far, I'm binge-watching Frasier (the original series, not the reboot), reading a bunch of chick lit, and diamond painting.

We attended a luncheon for retired Abbott employees today. Chatted with a few folks I knew, ate a tasty meal, heard an interesting presentation on new medical technologies/devices, and took home a nice goodie bag with COVID tests, protein shakes and such.

I just learned that if you microwave peas fresh-picked from the garden, they explode. The tiny pea nuclei burst out of the bowl all over the interior of the microwave, leaving only a pile of hulls. I won't make THAT mistake again.

I think yuccas are yuck. There are two enormous ones taking over the back yard.

Now we'll see what BlueSky is all about. I've been looking for an offramp from Facebook for quite a while. Will this be better? Dunno. I'd have probably preferred to go back to LiveJournal, but admit the Russian ownership there gives me pause...
