Interesting controversy brewing. I am friends with all the participants so I hope it can avoid turning into "angry science".
Unfortunately, it’s clear to me that the data and methods in Oprea (2024) do not justify its headline conclusion.

Unless I’m missing something, I think that the right thing for the AER to do is to retract the paper.

Great event honoring @cfcamerer.bsky.social who has been impressing me for 40 years.
Katy, as usual, gave a magisterial overview of nudges & mega-studies
Related: @rthaler.bsky.social injecting “permission bias” alongside “publication bias”

Pub bias is journals not publishing null results
Permission bias is NGO and Govt insights teams not getting permission to test the best nudges
Angela Duckworth and I are very excited to start a magnificent day of celebrating the great @cfcamerer.bsky.social at his @caltech.edu festschrift #cfcfc

I think this point by Deborah is key. The data colada team is b-school based and have raised standards for everyone. IMHO this article is well below the standard I expect from the Atlantic.
We should recognize that the people uncovering fraud and leading much of the reforms are also “business school psychologists”.
