"I know we can't be together, Lu." She closed her eyes and nodded but Loren wasn't finished. "Let's just enjoy what time we have."

"The upcoming dawn is a bigger problem to me. Especially with a distinct lack of castle to rest in. I've got to get out of here and get to safety before the sun's up, so I'm not going to finish her but hey... be my guest if you want to. I'm out of here!" She set off, passing through the destroyed door of the library and headed downstairs. Shortly after, Loren caught up. "Well, did you kill her?" "No," he said, thoughtfully. "I couldn't. I never thought I would learn about mercy and restraint from a vampire." "Ha! You're just full of surprises, aren't you? If I can overcome my monstrous nature, maybe you can too." "Is that warmth in your voice?" "Don't read too much into it. We have to hurry." "Alright. What's next?" "We're going to need transport. Let's get to the stables." They slipped out through a side entrance into a narrow stone walkway. Lucretia sped forward checking for threats and then beckoned Loren to follow. She crossed a paved courtyard over to the stables. The assault on the castle continued behind her. Once inside, she readied two black Friesian horses for travel. "Can your ready a cart?" She asked Loren. He nodded and got to work preparing the horses.

It would be so easy to return to the Night Court but Lucretia had made her decision. The world of night was her past. Even if it meant she had to handle hunters and Harriets alone, she would not return to that life of death.

Because you were remiss in your duties the rest of us have to pick up the pieces.” She barely held a snarl back. “I don't know who I can trust with the way things are. The Spirit Folk are splintering and the Mad God only stands to benefit from it. Yet here you sit in your hot spring, hiding away and telling yourself you can't do anything because the Terrans won't talk to you."

Each one's gaze abrasively sought her. She felt her skin prickle as each of the Mad God’s watchful eyes found their quarry in her. “I'm not afraid of you.” Cheyna's meek voice wavered. “Liar.” Laughter echoed all around amplified by the erratic movements of the deranged eyes. “You know you're not strong enough to contain me, Spirit Walker.” “That's not true.” “It is though. Your command of the wild powers is laughable. No more dangerous than branches swaying on a summer breeze.” Condescending laughter rippled out of the void. The crazed eyes blinked and shuddered. Cheyna steeled herself, pushing through her fears. “I am the coming storm, Mad God.” She growled through gritted teeth. “Such determination.” The eyes all around her shattered, fragments of illusion crashing to the ground.

Lucretia's vision was still a blur, but forms and colour were returning. "You saved me," she said distantly. "You would have done the same for me," Loren said. His voice was softer now. He still held her in his arms. "You... don't know that," she protested weakly but her heart wasn't in it. "Can you see, yet?" "No, it's still blurry." Crackling wings flapped in through the breach. She heard a sound that she loathed. Spectral screeching filled the air. "I hear necrovultures, Loren!"
