Introduction Post!

Hi 👋 I'm Dr. Sheryl Hosler, currently a postdoc at Penn State synthesizing data from a 12yr study to figure out which cover crops mixtures do the best at providing multiple ecosystem services in farm fields.

I love #scicomm, restoration, urban ecology, dung beetles, and bees!

If a politician:

-Has never cared at all about whales before;

-Is in the pocket of big oil, an industry which has a financial incentive to oppose alternative energy;

and

-is a well-documented liar,

You don't have to take their "we have to stop offshore wind to save whales" claims seriously.

🚨🚨🚨

Science will be much more efficient without scientists.

Universities are being destroyed because we don't NEED them anymore.

Instead, all existing data will be fed to AI "agents" who will mine them to "test new hypotheses" and "generate scientific breakthroughs". 🤨🤢🤮

Polar bear moms are fierce. This mom watched three different males approaching her nap spot, posing a threat to her cub. They retreated with Mom stopping to assess the situation regularly. You can see a pretty serious scar on her face, indicating that she was quick to defend her cubs. #mammals 🌿

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

If we focus on restoring ecosystem processes rather than a reference species assemblage

Can we derive general rules?

Here we find plant-pollinator networks in grasslands

& plant-herbivore ones in woodlands

both become more complex with restoration age & area

Dung, dung, dungggg!

Aphodiini (dung beetles) are important decomposers & comprise ~2,200 species, yet are still a bit of a mystery. Here, their molecular phylogeny is reconstructed to explore the evolutionary history of their nesting behaviour & body size! 🧪 🌍 💩

Attn Pennsylvania voters: A massive wave of texts is being sent from random numbers telling Democrats and Independents to vote “No” on the Supreme Court retention questions. These messages are fake and misleading, part of a coordinated disinformation push.

yes, we should train students for jobs that don't exist yet...by giving them a solid foundation in core skills of thinking, creating, and understanding. not by teaching them to babysit some LLM.

People of Illinois, we need your help.

Get your cell phones out – record what you see. Put it on social media. Peacefully ask for badge numbers and identification. Speak up for your neighbors.

We need to let the world know this is happening – and that we won’t stand for it.
