And then once again, is the tool of social media inherently bad for our brains? I have no idea, but downloading a new social media after significantly restricting my social media use is making me think and it feels relevant to share… Please share thoughts!

In the same vain as separating the art from the artist, can we separate social media from the contexts that create it in order to take advantage of their benefits to fight against the system or is that just some version of commodity fetishism?

And how much is the evil of social media a product of the tool or the system that has existed long before it? At the same time we can’t ignore how it serves as a perpetrator of that system and has created unique cultural problems that feel so incredibly sticky.

And if it is just a blip of human history before being plunged into another “dark ages” will we look back on it as a peak or a valley of human history?

At the same time it makes dialogues with individuals from all kinds of perspectives so much more accessible, allows us to connect with community members which can lead to in-person interactions, and democratizes information sharing and receiving in an incredible way that must be appreciated.

It for sure can’t replace face to face interaction and community building, and how much is the time we spend on it taking away from what we could be building out in our communities, or simply time we could be taking care of ourselves in the ways we neglect like time with nature or people or walking?

Not trying to be too cynical, I just wonder whether the human brain can handle it, even without intentionally addicting algorithms. Like does the immediacy and obscuring of the human being on social media necessarily fuck with our minds and make us worse?

I’m always excited about climbing, but I recently started learning guitar, now this reminds me to dust off my old roller skates!!
