The 'Retarded' class were all the Black & Brown kids bussed in. I did not last long... I ended up in the 'gifted' class... IMO both the 'gifted' and the 'retarded' classes sorted the affluent and well-connected from minorities, bussed kids, and poor. The whole system was a racket.

Teachers like that should be named. Like my 4th grade teacher MRS SMERLING who I thought was so great. She sent me to the counselor, and together they declared me "Retarded" (that is the term they used back then - the school told me I was).
