Australian Defence ORBAT guru.

Opinions are my own.
However, A21s final deathnote was the East-Timor Crisis and INTERFET, which proved Australia needed an ADF and army capable of conducting expeditionary operations.

Overall, the structure was abandoned due to strategic ambiguity and shifting guidance, failure to meet the change objectives, internal resistance and cultural challenges (which I am hearing now is still a problem for infantry) & the lack of resources to carry out the desired reforms properly.

A key aspect of A21 was the investment in air and ground mobility assets, including helicopters, Bushmasters, and ASLAVs. These assets would enhance the mobility of the TFs and enable them to operate effectively in low force-to-space ratio environments.

The A21 plan proposed moving away from the traditional divisional/corps structure and creating independent TFs by embedding combat arms (including armour such as tanks, artillery, and engineers) within infantry units.

It is a structure optimised for the Defence of Australia doctrine.

Across the Western world, Armies wanted to experiment with and develop new force structures after the Cold War to prepare for the unknowns of the 21st Century. The #ausarmy's A21 restructure was one set of proposed reforms, and this structure is the subject of today's #orbat.

The Task Force worked with local police, soldiers from the PNGDF, NZDF and other Australian Government agencies to protect critical infrastructure and stabilise the security situation.

Most of the force came from the 3rd Brigade's 3rd Battalions Support Company, with LT Omodeli being OC Reconniance Survelience and Sniper Platoon.

LILIA was the Australian Government responded to the request from the Solomon Islands Government under the 2017 bilateral security treaty to support the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in stabilising the situation in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Today's #ausarmy #orbat is the often-forgotten deployment of 2021 - Operation LILIA.

Good luck dodging all those missiles, pal, especially those launched by light but rapidly deployed HIMARS troops or the new #usmc formations that can fight and sustain themselves on the smallest of specs of rock.

Anyway, it's still a deadly formation... on paper.

The second limitation isn't how many ships it takes to lift and deploy such a formation. The PLAN can do that easily enough. It's that flotilla's signature.

Imagine you set sail with the intent to fight as a full battlegroup, hoping to deploy to the Philipines or Okinawa.
December 17, 2024 at 10:37 PM

The first big limitation/question is, can the PLA keep these in the fight? A lot of vehicles have to be sustained. Yes, the hull commonality of the ZBD05 IFV helps, but it still requires a lot of man-hours; you'd know that if you stopped bullying your local RAME person - they need love, too.

Coming to a beach near you - the PLANMC Heavy Battalion #orbat.

Now, at face value, this is a lot of firepower. However, scratching the surface, it has some severe limitations.

A few changes to the #ausarmy’s #orbat have been announced recently. So far we have the ‘disestablishment’ of 6bde and the transfer of 9 REG Royal Australian Artillery from 2nd (Aust.) Division to 10 Bde.

…guess I'll have to do an ORBAT soon.

Whilst researching the 1st Aust. Div in 1999 #orbat, I came across a paper from COL D J HURLEY (yes, the future governor-general) published in 1997. He proposed an Australian army structure that is... interesting.
November 25, 2024 at 7:19 AM
This was the formation of a unit to explicitly realise an Army Policy Objective that had existed since the 1940s— DJFHQ could provide a headquarters to deployed Australian forces, supply staff to coalition headquarters, and provide C2 to all domains. It achieved this through two 'fly-away teams'.
November 25, 2024 at 7:05 AM
The real innovation from the Defence of Australia Army was the implementation of the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters (DJFHQ). The DJFHQ was to handle operational aspects of any deployed force, while the higher levels would focus on the 'political and higher-level issues of national defence.'
November 25, 2024 at 7:05 AM
The division had 1 medium brigade based in Darwin(1s BDE), 1 light brigade based in Townsville (3BDE—aka high readiness force), and 1 reserve brigade with its headquarters also in Townsville. The division also boasted several direct command units, like the 3RAR Parachute Battlegroup.

Today's #ausarmy #orbat for the #orbatboys, the Aust. Army's 1st Division in 1999. 1DIV aimed to move away from the Defence of Australia doctrine and become flexible, deployable, and scalable.

It would face its first test during INTERFET.
November 25, 2024 at 7:05 AM
The second unit would be a permanent allocation of parachute riggers and loadies/loggies to get as much equipment on the ground as the force needs.
November 17, 2024 at 8:04 AM
Primarily, these guys would be using Loierting munitions (or whatever Land300 procures) and light vehicles to zip around and AO pop up and strike targets with maximum lethality, with the Brigade commander able to apply their capability wherever needed.
November 17, 2024 at 8:04 AM

Since this is a fictitious force structure, let me explain the units I've created. I've started by copying a practice you can see in many French formations; I've pulled the RSS & DFSW platoons from both infantry battalions to form a deep-strike combat team.

Like deploying equipment from ship to shore, a lot goes into Tactical Airlanding Operations (TALO), rapidly deploying from a C-17, C-130 or C-27. As a result of the complexities, it warrants specialisation.
November 17, 2024 at 8:04 AM
The intent of the possible future structure is to optimise its potential strengths and wholly lean into it becoming an Airlanding Brigade, specialising in using RAAF Air-Lift platforms to deliver equipment and personnel rapidly across our region.
